Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ear gauge sizing and stretching

What size should I start stretching at?

Most standard ear piercings are 18g or 20g. The typical starting size for intentional stretching is 14g or 16g. Never skip sizes when stretching - always go up one size at a time to avoid damage and ensure healthy stretching.

How long should I wait between sizes when stretching my ears?

Wait a minimum of 6-8 weeks between smaller sizes (8g-2g), 8-12 weeks for 0g and larger sizes, and 3-6 months for sizes over 1 inch. Longer waiting periods are always better than rushing. Your ears will tell you when they're ready - there should be no pain, resistance, or discomfort when sizing up.

What's the difference between gauge, millimeters, and inches for ear stretching?

These are just different measurement systems for the same sizes. Gauge (g) is the traditional system but works backwards - larger numbers mean smaller sizes. Millimeters (mm) and inches are more straightforward measurements. For example, 0g equals 8mm equals approximately 5/16 inch. We provide all three measurements for every size to make it easy.

Can I wear wood plugs while stretching my ears?

No. Wood plugs should only be worn in completely healed ear lobes, at least 4-6 weeks after stretching to a new size. Wood is porous and can harbor bacteria in unhealed tissue, leading to infections. Use glass, surgical steel, or titanium for fresh stretches, then switch to wood once fully healed.

Do you make custom ear gauge sizes?

Yes! Everything at Omerica Organic is made to order. We can create any size, wearable length, or flare configuration you need. Whether you need an in-between size, extra-long wearable length for thick lobes, or special measurements, contact us with your specifications and we'll craft a custom pair for you.

Will my ears shrink back if I remove my gauges?

It depends on the size. Generally, ears stretched to 2g (6mm) or smaller will often shrink back to close to a standard piercing size. Sizes 0g-00g (8-10mm) may shrink significantly but often won't fully close. Sizes 1/2 inch (12mm) and larger are generally considered permanent. Individual results vary based on genetics, skin elasticity, stretching speed, and how long you've been at each size.
